AWHONN Instructor Course


AWHONN Promoting the Health of Women and Newborns

The Intermediate Instructor Course is a one-day classroom train-the-trainer program that focuses on the principles of adult learning, teaching strategies specific to the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course, and information about the administrative and operational aspects of the course. Included within the program are opportunities to present sections of the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring course as a micro teach exercise and scenarios of difficult educational situations that may occur when teaching the course.

Course Objectives:
  • Integrate principles of adult learning into the didactic and skills components
  • Incorporate appropriate teaching methods and strategies during the didactic components
  • Demonstrate entry level proficiency in teaching and guiding participants during the skills stations of the program
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the assigned component of the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course during the microteach presentation
  • Discuss administrative responsibilities and AWHONN policies and procedures for the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course
To be eligible to participate in the Intermediate Instructor Course, the candidate must:
  • Complete the AWHONN Verification Form for Instructor Candidate Qualifications, the Instructor Responsibilities Form for the Fetal Heart Monitoring Education Programs, and the Biographical Data Form
  • Document active licensure as a registered nurse or physician
  • Maintain current AWHONN membership
  • Document a minimum of two years recent experience in fetal monitoring
  • Document current clinical involvement in fetal heart monitoring (FHM) as a staff nurse, physician, manager, clinical nurse specialist, advanced practice registered nurse, certified midwife (registered midwife in Canada) or educator that includes responsibilities for assessment of clinical skills of others in FHM
  • Maintain professional development in intrapartum, antepartum, high risk care and FHM through attendance at relevant continuing education activities
  • Submit evidence of successful completion of the current edition Intermediate Course within three years of the Intermediate Instructor Course application to include documentation of competency validation, course date and workshop number
  • Complete the Conflict of Interest, Licensing Agreement and Financial Declaration Statements
Participants in the Intermediate Instructor Course must successfully complete an Intermediate Course Teach-Back observed by a Designated Instructor or Instructor Trainer within one year of their Instructor Course. Upon successful completion of the Teach-Back, the Candidate becomes an Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course Instructor, eligible to teach the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course.
